May Day Baby - Caroline at 26 months

Big Girl Caroline,

What a whirlwind May you have had! We have spent just about every weekend for the past few months out of town. Some highlights of this month were Mothers Day at Biltmore, a visit to the Booth Western Art Museum followed by a road trip to Dallas to visit your favorite Texas cousins, a stop at Daddy's favorite Cuban Sandwich shop in Birmingham, a visit to New Orleans which included stops to try fried alligator, beignets, and cafe au lait from Cafe du Monde and muffulettas from the Central Grocery.

Your bedtime routine now includes reading short vowel cards. I usually attempt to hide half the deck since you regale me with stories about or definitions of each word you read (i.e. "c-a-t; CAT! Kitty cats bite. Mommy says be gentle. Love Kitty cat. Kitty cats bite," or "k-i.....Mommy, I have a boo-boo. See Mommy. See Mommy. My boo-boo hurts. k-i......Madison painted my nails. See Mommy? k-i-ck; KICK! I kick with my leg. See Mommy! I kick balls with my leg). You also insist in spelling words with the movable alphabet and reviewing cards of insects, North American animals, and/or famous landmarks. After that, I can usually sneak out after just one or two books and two songs (vs. six or more books and a dozen songs). No matter the time of day, I try to comply since I am not sure how long your interest in spelling and reading will last and I would hate to discourage your love of learning.

I love you bunches and bunches, sweet baby.

25 Months

Dearest Caroline,

This year, you finally got the hang of egg hunts and did very well at all of your hunts - school, church, and the mountains. Also, I knew better than to hand you to "The Bunny", and so we made it through our church event without any tears. Your balloon heart creation entertained you until May, and your bunny tattoo lasted six weeks before I finally scrubbed it off. You had a lovely time dying eggs at Grandma Mary's on Easter and LOVED having cousin time in the mountains.
